Portable Air Conditioner Companies methodology
How Portable Air Conditioner Companies are qualified and scored using frozen weights, evidence rules, confidence, tie handling, and immutable versions.
Last verified 2026-08-20
Scope
Companies materially competing in the current U.S. residential vented portable air-conditioner market, assessed through exact current representative models across comparable DOE/SACC capacity classes. Single-hose, dual-hose, inverter, and heating-capable portable ACs qualify when portable cooling remains the primary use.
Choose a portable-air-conditioner company with evidence-backed cooling, efficiency, noise, comfort, installation, value, and ownership support for a U.S. home, apartment, or bedroom where permanent air conditioning is impractical.
Criteria and weights
Evidence standard
Material score inputs must resolve through a public claim and evidence record to an admissible source. Primary documentation supports specifications and policies; credible independent evidence is used for performance or experiential claims when available. AI output and search snippets are not ranking evidence.
Missing and conflicting evidence
Missing evidence is never guessed or silently reweighted. A predeclared category rule may handle a verified absence; otherwise the score remains incomplete. Conflicting source evidence stays visible, can reduce confidence, and blocks an input when unresolved.
Coverage and confidence
Evidence coverage measures how much of the frozen rubric has admissible support. Confidence reflects source strength, freshness, corroboration, and source-conflict status. Neither measure adds points to the organic score.
Deterministic scoring, rounding, and ties
Scores use the frozen weights above and full-precision deterministic arithmetic. Public scores use one decimal place, but rank order uses the unrounded value. Remaining ties use competition ranking and are never broken by editorial preference.
Versions and corrections
This page describes Version 1.0 of the methodology for Version 1.0 of this ranking. A material evidence or scoring change creates a successor version; prior published history is not silently overwritten.
The primary public ranking displays at most the Top 10 qualified companies. Complete evaluated results and immutable rank history remain in canonical data; scores are never changed to fill or enter the public list.
Included
- The company currently sells a vented residential portable air conditioner in the United States.
- Exact representative model identity and DOE/SACC capacity are preserved before comparing results.
- At least one approximately 5,000–8,000, 10,000, or 12,000 BTU DOE/SACC class is represented; dual-hose/inverter flagships are sampled where available.
- Qualification requires current official documentation plus comparable independent exact-model cooling evidence for every critical criterion.
- All seven frozen criteria receive a documented disposition, at least 90 points of affirmative evidence, and at least 75 confidence points.
Excluded
- Window air conditioners, mini-splits, evaporative coolers, central HVAC, and commercial spot coolers are outside scope.
- ASHRAE or marketing BTU may not substitute for DOE/SACC in capacity comparisons.
- A dual-hose label alone does not earn a high score without evidence-backed performance and execution.
- Companies without comparable current independent exact-model cooling evidence remain pending and unranked.
- Temporary discounts, affiliate placement, popularity, and another publisher's winner label do not determine rank.
